5 Centimeters Per Second is undoubtedly a masterpiece. I despise love stories as a rule, but this one is bafflingly wonderful. I love the understatement, the restraint. Two intelligent, fairly articulate, preternaturally responsible kids falling in love. No Romeo and Juliet drama, no jealousy or suicide pacts or plans to run away and elope. Makes it even more sharply heartbreaking. Mamoru Hosoda is great too, but Makoto Shinkai is the next Miyazaki.
