Someone at work gave me robert jordan's The Eye of the World. Didn't ask for it, tried jordan some years ago and didn't like it. Instead i'm re-reading iain m. banks's Against a Dark Background, this is the story joss whedon was shooting for but didn't reach: intensely character-driven sf, grim, moving, heartbreaking, unforgettable.
